Quando Roberto Carlos cantou em Jerusalém para o 1% de milionários que o Brasil tem, indignei-me, envergonhei-me de compartilharmos a mesma cidadania brasileira, mas pensei: Bem, é Roberto Carlos, um romântico alienado. Como Robbie Williams, Juanes, que não representam nenhuma ideologia que valha. Eles nem devem saber que existe Palestina e palestinos.
Para gente desse tipo - da sua turma?! - eis um sucinto esclarecimento político-geográfico. No prólogo, nem vou falar na Faixa de Gaza, porque se vocês não souberem da carnificina que Israel protagonizou lá no ano passado, tá danado.

Quando soube que vocês dois - que povoaram meu universo musical desde a infância e se dão ares de cidadãos responsáveis bem-informados com preocupações humano-sociais - iam cantar em Tel Aviv e que deram de ombros à tentativa de Roger Waters de dissuadi-los de sujar seus nomes com tamanho erro de julgamento, aí fiquei chocada e perguntei-me o que os motivava.

O que aconteceu com os dois jovens talentos futebolísticos promissores - dos soldados receberem ordens, e as executarem na íntegra, de atirar nos pés dos rapazes para que ficassem inválidos - que Roger Waters cita abaixo é apenas a ponta do iceberg. A perversidade dos soldados que servem a IDF é ilimitável e ilimitada. A de seus superiores hierárquicos então nem se fala.

Vocês sabem que os meninos que reagem às agressões e a balas com pedradas e são presos, são condenados a um mínimo de 10 anos de prisão e à prisão perpétua quando "danificam" propriedade militar israelense, até com um arranhão?

Vocês têm consciência do significado de irem cantar em Tel Aviv quando artistas como Santana, Elvis Costelo, Bono, Marinah, cientistas do calibre de Stephen Hawking e cineastas do calibre de Ken Loach e tantos outros se recusam a ser cúmplices da limpeza étnica da Palestina?

Estou com vergonha de vocês serem brasileiros.
Mas ainda tenho esperança que ajam direito e cancelem o show. 

Se não desistirem desta representação indígna, por favor, no palco de Tel Aviv, falem apenas inglês, com sotaque estadunidense (porque britânico seria ofensa à mobilização dos artistas londrinos) e tentem fazer o mundo pensar que vocês abdicaram da nossa nacionalidade para pegar a de George W. Bush e de seus cupinchas, ou a israelense. Quem sabe ganham um apartamento novinho em folha em uma das colônias:invasões/pseudo-assentamentos na Cisjordânia?

Vocês sabem que a "rules of engagement" - ordem de ataque na Operação israelense Protective Edge na Faixa de Gaza em 2014 (e nas anteriores) foram as palavras hebraicas: "Hora'ot Pticha Be'esh", que significam permissão para atirar indiscriminadamente em todo ser vivo? 

Tipo a ordem militar inglesa que gerou a morte do nosso compatriota em Londres: Shoot to Kill.

Vocês sabem que só durante a Operation Protective Edge Israel matou 551 crianças (299 mulheres), 3.374 crianças ficaram inválidas para o resto da vida e dezenas de milhares estão traumatizadas em um ponto incompreensível para quem não conhece a prisão Gaza e vê os gazauís serem bombardeados a três por quatro. 

O eminente jornalista britânico John Snow, da Channel 4, foi conferir o que diziam e mostravam seus colegas no terreno e ficou chocadíssimo. Daí ter botado a boca no trombone no vídeo abaixo.
Porque John Snow sabe que quem cala consente e é conivente.

No mês passado eu escrevi para Caetano e Gil e não recebi nenhuma resposta, mas suponho que eles irão cruzar a linha do piquete e tocar em Tel Aviv. 
Que seja. 
Eles devem ter razões imperativas que estão guardando para si mesmos. 
Em minha carta a eles, eu falei sobre futebol, praias, direitos humanos e sonhos. 
Aqui vai uma história sobre sonhos e futebol.

Jawhar Nasser Jawhar, 19, e Adam Abd al-Raouf Halabiya, 17, dois jovens e promissores jogadores de futebol, sonhavam em um dia jogar profissionalmente, talvez até defendendo a camisa do país deles. Em 31 de janeiro, enquanto eles caminhavam para casa, saindo de uma sessão de treinamento no Estádio de Faisal al-Husseini em al-Ram, no centro da Cisjordânia, forças israelenses abriram fogo contra eles sem aviso.
Jawhar foi atingido sete vezes em seu pé esquerdo e três vezes no direito. Halabiya foi ferido uma vez em seu pé esquerdo e uma no direito. Médicos no hospital governamental de Ramallah dizem que os dois nunca chutarão uma bola de futebol de novo; na verdade, serão necessários seis meses de tratamento antes que os médicos possam avaliar se eles poderão andar novamente.
Estes dois jovens não foram acusados de nenhum delito, e nenhum inquérito foi aberto sobre as ações dos soldados responsáveis por suas lesões incapacitantes.
Assim, Caetano e Gil, Jawhar e Halabiya não estarão presentes no show de vocês em Tel Aviv. No entanto, os homens que os balearam estão livres para comparecer, se desejarem.

Concluindo de uma vez por todas este tema de boicote contra apartheid, vocês dois sabem que em Israel, 20 por cento da população é árabe-palestina de origem, com uma grande maioria de cristãos, sobretudo na Galileia? Pois bem, como na América, no Brasil, na Ásia e na África, as Igrejas cristãs, sobretudo o Vaticano, instalaram ótimas escolas na Palestina, antes da Naqba, e que ficaram de ambos os lados da Linha Verde fornecendo a melhor educação aos meninos cristãos e muçulmanos nativos. São essas escolas que garantem aos palestinos estudo de qualidade como o ocidental e oportunidade de crescimento intelectual e social.
A última decisão de Binyamin Netanyahu para agredir os cristãos de forma geral e as Igrejas cristãs em particular - Vaticano, Presbiteriana, Metodista, Anglicana - explicitamente favoráveis ao Estado da Palestina e ao boicote de Israel - decidiu tirar o controle dessas escolas das mãos da Igreja para assumi-lo totalmente. 

Isto significa transformá-las em escolas públicas, onde já procedem à lavagem cerebral dos palestinos, de sua "israelização" e proibição de qualquer menção da Palestina e de sua história; sem contar a qualidade inferior de ensino em relação às escolas destinadas aos cidadãos judeus. As escolas cristãs respeitam a cultura palestina milenar e o material de ensino é de ponta.

Israel is seeking to bring dozens of church-run schools under government control, a move that community leaders have warned will curb the last vestiges of educational freedom for the country's large Palestinian minority.

Most of the 47 schools, which are among the highest-achieving in Israel, were established by Christian orders more than 100 years ago, before Israel's creation in 1948.

Today, they are among the few independent schools catering to Israel's community of 1.5 million Palestinian citizens, who make up one-fifth of the population. The schools are attended by about 33,000 children - some 5 percent of the Palestinian school-age population - and employ 3,000 teachers.

Israel segregates the country's education system based on ethnicity.

Palestinian leaders say the church-run schools, which educate Christians and Muslims, are the only hope for most families trying to escape dire conditions in the government-run arab education system. 

Yousef Jabareen, an Arab member of the Knesset, said that unlike the state-run schools, the church-run schools had been relatively free of governmental interference that is designed to create "an atmosphere of intimidation and fear".

"In the Arab state schools, Jewish officials appoint the principals, vet the teachers and dictate the curriculum," he said. "Christian schools have the flexibility to choose their staff, and teach pupils about their national identity, Palestinian culture and history, and their rights as citizens. All that is under threat now." 

Jabareen added that the new development indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new right-wing coalition is seeking to strengthen its political control over the Palestinian minority.

Naftali Bennett, leader of the settler party Jewish Home, was recently appointed education minister.

Fahim Abdelmasih, principal of the Terra Santa school in Ramle and spokesman for the church-run schools, said the 47 schools faced a "death sentence" after the education ministry announced last year that it had slashed their long-standing subsidies.

Negotiations with the government recently broke down after education officials suggested that the schools come under government control as a solution.

Traditionally, Israel has funded between 60 and 75 percent of the costs of approved independent schools, with parental contributions and fundraising filling the gap.

However, the church schools now receive no more than 45 percent of their running costs, Abdelmasih said.

"The schools just can't survive after those kinds of cuts," he said.

Education officials have also capped payments from parents whose children attend the schools, effectively barring them from making up the shortfall.

The schools' officials have accused the government of discrimination, pointing out that in May, Netanyahu agreed to cover in full the budget of two networks of independent schools for ultra-Orthodox Jews, in return for their parties joining his coalition.

Previously, many of these church schools had a matriculation rate of 95 percent, better than most of Israel's top Jewish schools.

Yet, with Palestinian families three and a half times more likely to be below the poverty line than Jewish families, the schools, according to many parents, are now struggling to pay existing fees.

The alternative for these families is to take their children to state-run arab schools, where the dropout rate is 17 percent, and barely more than a quarter of students matriculate.

Nabila Espanioly, director of the Tafula child development centre in Nazareth, said the poor performance of Arab state schools could be explained by decades of severe discrimination.

Studies by the Follow-Up Committee for Arab Education show that Jewish pupils receiveat least five times more funding than Arab pupils - $1,100 each compared to $192.

The Arab sector suffers from a shortage of more than 6,000 classrooms and 4,000 teachers.

Jewish schools have twice as many computers relative to their student body than Arab schools.

In addition, Palestinian leaders have long complained of interference by the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, in the appointment and promotion of teachers in the Arab state system, undermining educational values and the professionalism of its staff.

"Parents want quality education for their children but the reality is that the only good choice for most of them is one of these church schools," Espanioly said.

Many of the community's leaders - academics, professionals, and Knesset members - were educated in such schools, observed Oudeh Bisharat in a recent column for the Haaretz daily.

Israel now appeared "determined to crush" the system because of its very success, he added.

Boutros Mansour, principal of the Baptist school in Nazareth, said the church-run schools expected the same treatment as the large number of independent schools for some 200,000 Jewish children from the religious ultra-Orthodox community, known as Haredim. They are fully funded by the government.

"The ridiculous thing is that the schools for the Haredim break the law by refusing to teach the core curriculum, including subjects like maths, English and science, and they get 100 percent funding," he said.

"We, on the other hand, teach more than the core curriculum and have some of the best results in the country, and yet we are being starved of funds and are in danger of closure," he added.

The education ministry was unavailable for comment. But in a statement this month to Haaretz, it said the church schools had rejected all of its proposals.

It suggested that they "join the public education system, which would mean a budget allocation of 100 percent while preserving the schools' special characteristics".

Mansour, however, said the schools' academic achievements and special character, including its Christian ethos, would be impossible to maintain if they came under government control.

Some rights groups vowed to take action. Adalah, a legal centre for the Palestinian minority, said it was preparing to challenge funding cuts in the courts. The policy, said Adalah lawyer Sawsan Zaher, contravened the 1961 UN convention against discrimination in education, which Israel has signed, as the government was fully funding independent Jewish schools.

Israel also had an obligation under international law to recognise the protected status of schools that existed before Israel's creation and have served a "homeland minority", said Zaher.

Abdelmasih said that if the education ministry refused to reconsider its cuts, Christian leaders in Israel would appeal to Pope Francis to exert pressure on Israel.

The threat to the church-run schools comes as Israel's small community of Christian Palestinians - about two percent of Israel's population - says it feels increasingly under attack after a string of hate crimes against Christian and Muslim sites were committed by Jewish groups closely associated with settlements.

Other Palestinian Christians complain of feeling pressured by the government to serve in the army, worrying that military service would put them on a collision course with Israel's Muslim population.

Mansour said such pressures have led many Palestinian Christians to consider emigrating. "Our schools are important in keeping the connection between Christians and this land. We tell our pupils about their Palestinian arab identity and heritage - that this is their country."

Jabareen, the arab Knesset member, submitted a bill this month that would require the education ministry to promote educational and cultural values suitable for the Palestinian minority.

"At the moment, the education system strongly advances Zionist values of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, and Jewish culture and heritage," he said.

"It entirely ignores the identity and culture of 20 percent of the population, and that has to change," he added.

Na linha de Gil & Caetano, Israel ousou publicar um relatório que precedeu o da ONU no qual alega que "the Israel Defence Forces’ operation in Gaza last summer was a moral, defensive war conducted in accordance with international law."
O dossiê divulgado no domingo passado foi escrito por vários ministros e visava contra-atacar o relatório da ONU abaixo, com cujas investigações Israel recusou-se a cooperar.  Mesmo assim, o documento do United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) servirá de base para o processo que os palestinos abriram contra Israel no Tribunal da Háguia no dia 25 de junho.
A hasbara de Israel tem 250 páginas de fabulações e justificações inverossímeis, dentre as quais, a diminuição do número de mortos civis palestinos não ter sido proposital  (!) e a “imperative necessity” da operação militar em resposta ao foguetório do Hamas. O objetivo desta, segundo a hasbara, era “restoring security to Israeli civilians living under Hamas rocket fire” and “dismantling the Hamas tunnel network used to infiltrate Israel”.
Vale lembrar que conforme as estatísticas das Nações Unidas, no mínimo 1.483 civilis foram assassinados (de um total imediato de 2.205), dos quais, 521 crianças e 283 mulheres.
Daí a resposta de Sami Abu Zuhri, porta-voz do Hamas: “Israeli war crimes are clear because they were committed in front of live cameras,” e de Ihab Bseiso, da Autoridade Palestina: “Israel’s decision to deny having targeted civilians in Gaza is the logical extension of what it did in the Gaza Strip.”

Riyad al-Maliki, ministro das Relações Exteriores da Palestina, depositou a demanda oficial de seu governo na quinta-feira, dia 25, às 11 horas, na promotoria da corte criminal internacional da Háguia.
O protocolo era o seguinte. A delegação palestina chega à ao bloco branco de edifícios que compõem o tribunal e entregaria um arquivo de centenas de páginas contendo investigação minuciosa dos crimes de Israel na Palestina.
"Those documents describe to prosecutors for the first time in detail the Palestinian complaint against Israel for alleged breaches of international law, including serious war crimes", disse Riyad antes e após a cerimônia: "Palestine is a test for the credibility of international mechanisms... a test the world cannot afford to fail. Palestine has decided to seek justice, not vengeance."
Ao crumprir sua missão, o ministro deslancha uma cadeia de eventos que poderiam levar responsáveis políticos e militares israelenses ao banco dos réus por crimes de guerra e contra as leis internacionais.
Um dos delegados palestinos, Ammar Hijazi, disse que o arquivo “draws a grim picture of what Israel is doing and why we think that there are reasonable grounds … for the prosecutor to start investigations.”
A decisão de processar ou não os acusados cabe à chefe da procuradoria Fatou Bensouda. A Háguia não processa Estados e sim indivíduos. Portanto, não tem autoridade para punir Israel por nenhum de seus crimes, apenas os mandantes políticos e militares, como foi feito no caso da Iugoslávia e tantos outros da África..
Um delegado palestino explicou que "the file is broken down into three main categories of complaint, the whole file is introduced by a short narrative running to about 30 pages. If Bensouda herself decides not to move to the next stage, we reserve the right to make our own formal criminal complaint as we are entitled as members of the ICC. One section of the complaint will focus on issues relating to illegal Israeli settlement activity; another the treatment of Palestinian prisoners. A final section deals with last summer’s war in Gaza."
Outro palestino familiarizado com o processo que cobre o período de 13 de junho de 2014 a 31 de maio de 2015, "high profile cases that will be highlighted include the Israeli decision to develop a new settlement of 2.600 housing units at Givat Hamatos in east Jerusalem, Israeli settlement building in the Jordan Valley and the killing of four boys on Gaza beach during the war, an incident in which Israel recently cleared itself of criminal culpability."
É bem provável que Fatou leve adiante o processo, já que foi ela que pediu que os palestinos montassem um dossiê detalhado. Não foi uma iniciativa da Autoridade Nacional Palestina. Ou seja, em linguagem da Háguia, não foi uma Palestinian-initiated complaint per se. O presidente palestino Mahmoud Abbas evitou quanto e como pôde a colisão frontal contra Israel ao aderir ao ICC.
Um fincioário da Háguia informou que Israel negou-se a dar qualquer informação ao Tribunal e vem dificultando o trabalho deste: "For its part Israel both has declined to provide information requested by Bensouda while arguing the ICC has no authority to investigate a Palestinian complaint because, it argues, Palestine is not a state."
O diplomata palestino Saeb Erekat preside a comissão de 45 delegados que prepararam o relatório. Dentre estes, ministros palestinos, presidentes de ONGs humanitárias, de forças de segurança e representantes do Fatah e Ghazi Hamid, representando o Hamas. A comissão foi aconselhada por uma equipe de cinco advogados internacionais.
O arquivo é exaustivo. Contém dezenas de violações às leis internacionais que vão de expropriação de terra, demolições de residência, condições de detenção dos presos políticos, a crimes de guerra.
"While large sections have been compiled from easily accessible open sources including press reports, reports compiled by both Palestinian and Israeli NGOs and by material published by UN and other organisations, some more sensitive sections were provided by the Palestinian security services," esclareceu um dos delegados.
Uma das fontes de informação inédita foi fornecida pelo Applied Research Institute, uma ONG localizada em Jerusalém. Só seu relatório contém 485 páginas que tratam majoritariamente de problemas com as colônias/invasões judias.
Pelo jeito, a maior força da reclamação palestina nesse tema reside no Artigo 8 do Estatuto de Roma do ICC, particularmente a seção 2 que trata de “transfer, directly or indirectly, by the Occupying Power of parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies, or the deportation or transfer of all or parts of the population of the occupied territory within or outside this territory.”
Para isso, o relatório inclui seções individuais sobre a expansão das colônias, confisco de terra, demolições, detruição de pomares e oliveirais pelos colonos e soldados, e a violência dos colonos com os palestinos e ataque a sítios religiosos cristãos e muçulmanos.
O dossiê dos palestinos inclui mapas e fotografias aéreas, documentos israelenses oficiais e comunicados de imprensa, assim como “evacuation orders” da IDF.

"The section on settler violence alone details every known settler violation documented during the period running to hundreds of incidents. We don’t focus in detail on individual cases,” disse um delegado palestino, “The object is to prove to the court the gravity of the crime. It is about showing a process in the time period covered. If the ICC decides to proceed with an investigation on any of the cases contained we will then provide more detail. This is the first submission but we do not anticipate it being the only one. Where it relates to settlement building and colonisation we are not in a position to show everything that has happened going back to 1967, only since 13 June last year, so we need to demonstrate how what is happening is a continuation of a longstanding Israeli policy. Colonisation is a huge issue but it will be the first time that the ICC has been asked to consider colonisation as an issue under international law rather than war crimes and that will be difficult.”
Foi Mustafa Barghouti, um dos membros mais ativos do comitê, que redigiu o documento de apresentação. Mostrou-se confiante, após a divulgação da investigação do Conselho de Direitos Humanos da ONU na segunda-feira, dia 22 de junho. “We are dealing with everything. So many different types of crimes. When you look at the Rome statutes there are a very wide range of possibilities for a criminal investigation. What was important for us in the first place was to show that it is systematic. One of the questions that people ask is why – since it could take a long time to come to a conclusion. My answer is that it will have a long term and an immediate effect. In the long term it is necessary because those who commit war crimes should be brought to justice. In the short term it is about ending Israeli impunity.”
Pois é.

Na segunda-feira, dia 22 de junho, a ONU divulgou o resultado de suas investigações da Operation Protective Edge que Israel levou a cabo na Faixa de Gaza em 2014, chamada de Gaza War, sabe-se lá porque cargas d'água.
Solicita que criminosos de guerra “at all levels of the political and military establishments” sejam processados, mas admite a dificuldade de obter resultados satisfatórios a curto prazo.
Contudo, o relatório valida as investigações preliminares do ICC, dando esperança de uma sequência e consequência desta investigação.
Grosso modo, a comissão da ONU nivela como sempre as forças militares de ocupante e ocupado ao identificar uma cultura de impunidade surrounding Palestinian militant groups and Israeli military alike".
Mas mesmo assim Binyamin Netanyahu ficou amuado. “You can see the reactions of the prime minister [Netanyahu] and other ministers, dismissing the implications of this report because it came from the human rights council,” disse Yael Stein, da B’Tselem. “And there are problems with the council. But nobody is looking at what is actually written in this report. They just close the discussion.”
Porém, pela primeira vez, a ONU não descarta uma intervenção direta nos territórios palestinos ocupados como Yasser Arafat pediu anos a fio até sua morte.
Uma fonte anônima foi clara: In the absence of meaningful internal change, the UN report looks to potential legal intervention from outside. It calls on the international community to exercise universal jurisdiction to try international crimes in national courts”.
Concretamente, esta medida permite a promotores estrangeiros lançarem mandados de prisão contra os criminosos acusados de crimes de guerra e contra a humanidade.
Porém, como diz um “Even if all the Turkel recommendations were implemented, we think it would have no effect on the ground,” disse Stein. “The bottom line is that the whole system is not built for accountability.”
Foi o que aconteceu com o ex-ditador chileno Augusto Pinochet em Londres em 1998. Os ingleses o prenderam atendendo a um mandado de prisão espanhol e foi também por isso que altos funcionários israelenses temiam viajar para a Inglaterra cinco anos atrás.
Mas desde então o lobby sionista interveio em favor dos criminosos israelenses e como explica um especialista, "since then [Pinochet's and Israelis' fear] universal jurisdiction guidelines have been tightened in the UK and several other European countries in a way that makes them less potentially threatening to Israeli ministers. The main impact of the new UN report is likely to be felt indirectly through the momentum it gives the ICC preliminary examination into the Gaza conflict, started earlier this year."
Uma porta-voz da Háguia disse que alguns promotores estavam analizando as descobertas. “The preliminary examination is still ongoing. It is an independent and impartial process; and the office [of the prosecutor] continues to gather information from multiple reliable sources, which will assist it in arriving at a fully informed decision at the end of the process.” E investigadores devem ir a Gaza em julho a fim de conferir informações.
David Bosco, autor de um livro sobre o ICC, prediz uma longa espera por justiça. “A five- or six-month preliminary examination is not all that unusual. but in the end I would expect that this preliminary examination would last much longer than many others, in part because of the political and institutional backdrop. It’s worth noting that Palestine itself has still not formally referred its situation to the court, although the court has jurisdiction. The prosecutor may take that as a sign that Palestinian leaders are uncertain about whether they actually want a full investigation. And that may increase the prosecutor’s hesitation.”
De fato a posição de alguns "cartolas" palestinos influentes é meio ambígua.
Mas Fred Abrahams, do Human Rights Watch, está otimista: “The report’s conclusions on the failures of Israel and Hamas to seriously investigate alleged war crimes will likely get the ICC’s immediate attention.”

Neste ínterim, uma nova Freedom Flotilla está no Mar Mediterrâneo pronta para navegar para a Faixa de Gaza. O navio líder é o Marianne of Gothenburg, mas pelo menos três barcos estão prontos para tentar furar o bloqueio israelense e chegar ao porto de Gaza.
Membros da coalizão Freedom Flotilla em Palermo, na Sicília, informaram que os barcos devem chegar em Gaza nesta semana. A ativista sueca  Kalle Ohlsson explicou que o principal objetivo deste movimento é forçar a reabertura do porto de Gaza ao livre comércio, afim dos gazauís poderem receber alimentos e materiais de construção: "Our aim is to end the siege of Gaza. We want the Palestinians to know that we haven't forgotten about them. There are many crises in the world, but the situation in Gaza is also really bad, and we do remember them."  Seu barco é o Marianne e carrega remédios e painéis solares - grande parte de Gaza continua às escuras desde que a IDF bombardeou as usinas hidrelétricas em 2014.
O fim do percurso está complicado devido ao perigo de sabotagem, prática que o Mossad aplica a cada nova flotilha da liberdade, pressão imaginável e o bloqueio concreto da marinha israelense que acha que as águas internacionais também lhe pertencem.
Daí a preocupação pela segurança dos participantes: "We're very concerned about safety. We have a strict non-violence policy. We're hoping Israel won't use violence against us," disse Kalle.
Em maio de 2010, Israel pegou pesado na Flotilha da Liberdade matando dez ativistas no navio Mavi Marmara.
Um colega sueco, Kajsa Ekis Ekman, que se encontra a bordo do Marianne espera que a marinha israelense não ouse atacá-los no clima atual: "I'm hoping that the Israelis actually understand that it would create a lot of more goodwill for them if they actually let the boats through, because there's no reason for them not to do that. It's counterproductive in the end. "I think they've totally lost common-sense here, because really it's not a threat to bring in medical equipment, to bring in medicine, to bring in solar panels."
O ambiente na flotilha organizada pelos escandinavos está pacífico e festivo, apesar dos perigos que os participantes enfrentam - com Israel, nunca se sabe. Uma das ativistas suecas, Ellen Hansson, confirmou o otimismo: "The atmosphere is really positive, and optimistic, and every time we've arrived at a new port there are so many activists that are coming to show their support. It's really a wonderful feeling that gives you hope and strength, that makes you really believe that together we can all do something amazing."
Pois é, não seria nada mal que se em vez de ir cantar para os opulentos ocupantes israelenses em Tel Aviv, Gil & Caetano fossem cantar para os dezenas de milhares palestinos desabrigados pelas bombas da IDF na Faixa de Gaza. Ou pelo menos ir dar um show em Ramallah para os palestinos!

Concluindo, na semana passada, Abe Foxman, presidente da Anti-Defamation League durante 50 anos, aposentou-se em uma cerimônia concorridíssima.
Seu jantar de despedida no hotel Waldorf Astoria de Manhattan na quarta-feira, contou com a presença da nata fisiológica dos Estados Unidos: George Bush pai e filho, Barack Obama, o presidente da NBA, o NYC Police Comissioner William Bratton, a modista Diane von Furstenberg, o colunista do Haaretz Ari Shavit e o do NYTimes Thomas Friedman, e até o arcebispo de Nova York. O presidente da Zionist Organization of America, Mort Klein, também estava, é claro, porque tinha de ter um fascista assumido para dar ao evento uma cor mais real.
Os discursos animados retrataram um homem que só eles conheceram ou que existia apenas em suas imaginações férteis.
A comunciadora Katie Couric o denominou "the defender of the Jewish people and an american idol"; Henry Kissinger, "A conscience for our time" (!); Françoise Delattre, embaixadora francesa na ONU, o chamou de "national treasure" e vendo as caras decepcionadas, estendeu sua dimensão a "an international treasure"  com depois seo presidente da NBA, que só devia falar sobre basquete para não dizer tamanha bobagem, disse que este homem, racista, era "the first defender of anti-discrimination in the world".

A impressão que esse grupo de puxa-sacos dava era que não conheciam a atuação sectária e reacionária da ADL. Aliás, atuação compartilhada por presidentes republicanos e democratas. Seu sucessor eventual será Jonathan Greenblatt, que trabalhou com Obama na Casa Branca até há pouco.
A Anti-Defamation League é um dos lobbies mais fortes dos Estados Unidos. Junto com a AIPAC, controla tudo: da imprensa, aos políticos a Hollywood.

War Crimes? Us? 

"War itself is a crime. There are few exceptions. I would exempt the war against Nazi Germany, since it was conducted against a regime of mass murderers, led by a psychopathic dictator, who could not be brought to heel by any other means.

This being so, the concept of "war crimes" is dubious. The biggest crime is starting the war in the first place. This is not the business of soldiers, but of political leaders. Yet they are rarely indicted.

These philosophical musings came to me in the wake of the recent UN report on the last Gaza war.

The investigation committee bent over backwards to be "balanced", and accused both the Israeli army and Hamas in almost equal terms. That, in itself, is problematic.

This was not a war between equals. On one side, the State of Israel, with one of the mightiest armies in the world. On the other side, a stateless population of 1.8 million people, led by a guerrilla organization devoid of any modern arms.

Any equating of such two entities is by definition contrived. Even if both sides committed grievous war crimes, they are not the same. Each must be judged on its own (de)merits.

...The committee castigates Hamas for committing war crimes against the Israeli population.

Israelis didn't need the committee to know that. A large share of Israeli citizens spent hours in shelters during the Gaza war, under the threat of Hamas rockets.

Hamas launched thousands of rockets towards towns and villages in Israel. These were primitive rockets, which could not be aimed at specific targets – like the Dimona nuclear installation or the Ministry of Defense which is located in the center of Tel Aviv. They were meant to terrorize the civilian population into demanding a stop to the attack on the Gaza strip.

They did not achieve this goal because Israel had installed a number of "Iron Dome" counter-rocket batteries, that intercepted almost all rockets heading for civilian targets. Success was almost complete.

If they are brought before the International Court in The Hague, the Hamas leaders will argue that they had no choice: they had no other weapons to oppose the Israeli invasion. As a Palestinian commander once told me: "Give us cannons and fighter planes, and we will not use what you call 'terrorism'."

The International Court will then have to decide whether a people that is practically under an endless occupation is allowed to use indiscriminate rockets. Considering the principles laid down by de Groot, I wonder what the decision will be.

... The case against the Israeli government and army is quite different. They have a plentitude of arms, from drones to warplanes to artillery to tanks.

If there was a cardinal war crime in this war, it was the cabinet decision to start it. Because an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip makes war crimes unavoidable.

Anyone who has ever been a combat soldier in war knows that war crimes, whether in the most moral or the most base army in the world, do occur in war. No army can avoid recruiting psychologically defective people. In every company there is at least one pathological specimen. If there are not very strict rules, exercised by very strict commanders, crimes will occur.

War brings out the inner man (or woman, nowadays). A well-behaved, educated man will suddenly turn into a ferocious beast. A simple, lowly laborer will reveal himself as a decent, generous human being. Even in the "Most Moral Army in the World" – an oxymoron if there ever was one.

... The Gaza Strip is a tiny territory, overcrowded by a bloated population of 1.8 million human beings, about half of them descendents of refugees from areas that became Israel in the 1948 war.

In any circumstances, such an attack was bound to result in a large number of civilian casualties. But another fact made this even worse.

Iisrael is a democratic state. Leaders have to be elected by the people. The voters consist of the parents and grandparents of the soldiers, members of both regular and reserve units.

This means that Israel is inordinately sensitive to casualties. If a large number of soldiers are killed in action, the government will fall.

Therefore it is the maxim of the Israeli army to avoid casualties at any cost – any cost to the enemy, that is. To save one soldier, it is permissible to kill ten, twenty, a hundred civilians on the other side.

This rule, unwritten and self-understood, is symbolized by the "Hannibal Procedure" – the code-word for preventing at any cost the taking of an Israeli soldier prisoner. Here, too, a "democratic" principle is at work: no Israeli government can withstand public pressure to release many dozens of Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of one Israeli one. Ergo: prevent a soldier from being taken prisoner, even if the soldier himself is killed in the process.

Hannibal allows – indeed, commands – the wreaking of untold destruction and killing, in order to prevent a captured soldier from being spirited away. This procedure is itself a war crime.

A responsible cabinet, with a minimum of combat experience, would know all this at the moment it was called upon to decide on a military operation. If they don't know, it is the duty of the army [or “military”] commanders – who are present at such cabinet meetings – to explain it to them. I wonder if they did.

All this means that, once started, the results were almost unavoidable. To make an attack without serious Israeli casualties possible, entire neighborhoods had to be flattened by drones, planes and artillery. And that obviously happened.

...Once you start a war, "stuff happens", as the man said. There may be more war crimes or less, but there will be a lot.

All this could have been told to the UN committee of inquiry, headed by an American judge, by the chiefs of the Israeli army, had they been allowed to testify. The government did not allow them.

The convenient way out is to proclaim that all UN officials are by nature anti-Semites and Israel-haters, so that answering their questions is counterproductive.

We are moral. We are right. By nature. We can't help it. Those who accuse us must be anti-Semites. Simple logic.

To hell with them all!"
